Motion sensors have both advantages and disadvantages

Updated on: June 30, 2022 | Published by: Oliver McCarty

On this page, he discusses both the benefits and the drawbacks of motion sensors (active and passive). It discusses the benefits of active and passive motion sensors, as well as the issues that might arise from using either type.

The term “motion sensor” refers to any sensing apparatus that can identify the presence of motion. Both active and passive motion sensors can detect movement in their respective environments. The active motion sensor sends radio frequency in the direction of the person or item being monitored and then analyzes the frequency that it receives to identify mobility. Microwave motion sensors are an example of an active type of motion sensor.

Motion sensors have both advantages and disadvantages

A passive motion sensor detects changes in motion by detecting changes in temperature and light. One example of this is the passive infrared (PIR) sensor, which monitors changes in thermal energy to identify whether an item or person is moving. The abbreviation for “Passive Infrared Sensor” is “PIR.” PIR detects and measures infrared light emitted by objects within its field of view (FOV) (Field of View). By default, it derives its energy from the heat that is detected in the area around it. When a person or any other body is in the vicinity, the object absorbs a greater amount of heat energy than it would under normal conditions. In this method, it is possible to detect whether or not the object or person is present.

The benefits of using a motion sensor

  • The following are the benefits that come with both active and passive types of motion sensors:
  • It is suitable for usage in extremely harsh environments that experience erratic heat cycles (Active Motion Sensor).
  • It has a longer lifespan, which is around one hundred thousand hours (Active type).
  • It can detect motion in both bright and dimly lit environments, making it ideal for use indoors. (Sensor for detecting passive motion)
  • It aids in the provision of security by identifying movements that might be suspicious.
  • Motion sensors are simple to set up and install.
  • The drawbacks of using a motion sensor

The following is a list of the drawbacks of both active and passive types of motion sensors:

  • Humans are susceptible to health risks when exposed to radiofrequency energy at high strength (active type).
  • Radio waves with frequencies in the microwave region are unable to pass through metal things (active type).
  • Above 350 degrees Celsius, passive motion sensors are unable to function properly.
  • The Line of Sight (LOS) is required for the passive sensor type to function properly; it is ineffective in areas without LOS.
  • The passive kind is unaffected even by the extremely slow motion of the item.
  • Within a range of around ten meters, a Passive Infrared (PIR) Sensor is able to identify human beings.
  • The PIR sensor kind can be triggered by any kind of moving item at all.
