Where Is She Born?

Born in Hell’s Kitchen, a formerly crime-ridden neighborhood of New York City, Keys (whose given name is Alicia Cook) was raised by a single mother. She took to music immediately, listening to jazz artists and singing in school productions from the time she was a preschooler. Her mother provided her with opportunities to develop her artistic talent, and by age fifteen she had already signed to the music label Columbia Records. She graduated high school early as the valedictorian of her class, and initially enrolled in Columbia University to study and pursue a musical career simultaneously. The pressure of trying to do so much at once was ultimately too much to handle, and Keys dropped out of college to focus entirely on music.
